AVATAR project

Become a “real-life” avatar, by entering, through imagery, directly into a dreamlike virtual reality, come and experiment, — and develop if you are able to — an original heuristic pre-prototype mechanism.

The AVATAR Project, which is a fundamental aspect of the IDEFI CréaTIC, is specifically coordinated by Etienne Perény, Etienne Armand Amato and Alain Berthoz. The project is open to students from the various CréaTIC Master’s Programmes through the option of various types of contribution or collaboration.

The project concerns immersion into the universe of Avatar through an experimental and cross-disciplinary approach. Its objective lies at the juncture point between the Arts, Information and Communication Services, and Neuropsychology and is to create an experimental mechanism allowing for the development of physiological measures so as to support the hypothesis of a duplication, with the presence both here in front of the screen, and over there beyond the screen, as is illustrated by our video players and empirical studies game studies. This type of status resonates in neuropsychology with the concept of artificial “Out of Body Experiences”, which are sensations caused using virtual reality devices on healthy subjects.

It is with these objectives in mind and on the basis of these theoretical foundations that the project was completed after 2 year of work at the Collège de France with the construction of a model of any idea which proved the feasibility of the experimental mechanism. This development phase was undertaken intensively with trainees from the “Serious Gamme Lab”, six students from the Digital Creation and Animation Institute, supported by professionals.

From November 2014, the project then continued with the partnership between the IDEFI CréaTIC and Collège de France in two phases:


  • From December to February, ad hoc or short intensive developments would be used to continue the mechanism which would then become the pre-prototype through a structuring of its architecture, scenarios and physiological interface sensors which will be developed with professionals.
  • From March to June 2015 focus will then shift towards perfecting, developing and making operational, on the basis of the tried and tested pre-prototype, an interactive installation which is fun and demonstrative, to outline and develop at Futur en Seine. It should allow the public to experiment with Avatar relations and new forms of immersion. Works will take place alternatively at Collège de France and Média-Lab.
